Beginner's Guide to Studying Spanish in Yucatan Mexico
Taking the time to learn some Spanish before travelling around Mexico or through
Latin America is not only incredibly useful but a highlight for many people. Having
knowledge of the language enriches experiences, helps you to connect to others and
is an amazing trait that will stay with you for life.
Here at La Casita in Merida, we believe that the Yucatan is THE perfect place to study
Spanish. The region is well connected, the start of many peoples’ backpacking
adventures, extremely safe and very affordable. The town is also packed with
authentic local culture allowing students to practice their Spanish outside of the
classroom.
Read on to find out about all of the benefits of studying Spanish here in Yucatan,
Mexico!
Affordable
Merida in Yucatan (where we are based) is a very affordable city to both live and
learn. At La Casita, we offer 2 and 4 week courses from $315 and also day courses
from as little as $10. This price also includes a homestay for the duration where to begin your travels.
The people
A big advantage to learning Spanish in Yucatan compared to other areas of Mexico
is that locals speak at a slow and understandable pace, meaning that you can
practice what you have learnt in the classroom at some of the amazing cantina's,
markets and bars. However, like much of Mexico, there is a fair bit of slang used,
which although can be tricky at first, is ALOT of fun once you know it!
More so, people from Yucatan are extremely friendly and welcoming. They are
patient with you and will be happy for you to practice your Spanish, even by having a
quick conversation on the street.
Experiences
There are ALOT of things to see and do whilst you study Spanish in the Yucatan. At
La Casita, we are surrounded by Mayan ruins, fresh water cenotes and beautiful
colonial architecture. An after-class or weekend visit to these places will create
memories that last a lifetime. Check out some of our favorites below:
Izamal
The yellow painted town of Izamal is a charming colonial town located 65 km from
Merida (and only $30 pesos by collectivo) and makes for the perfect day trip. Take a
stroll through the cobbled streets, visit the Mayan ruins which scatter the town’s
outskirts and soak up the grandeur of the covenants large atrium.
However, if history is not your thing, you will love to take a dive into the natural pools
known as cenotes. Coming from the Mayan 'dzonot', these ancient pools are
everywhere in the Yucatan. Each and every one is different with some completely
underground and other more exposed. A day trip to these will undoubtedly make for
an impressive Instagram feed.
Sunday Markets
Whilst there are markets everday in Merida, Sunday around Plaza Grande is
something special.
Local art and craft markets open, cultural and musical shows are held in the main
square and many street food vendors are open. This provides a great chance to
practice some Spanish, grab a bite of local Yucatan cuisine and buy souvenirs for
loved ones at home.
